On-line Courses and Virtual School Program
Shenandoah County Public Schools offers students distance learning opportunities. School Board Policy IGBG states that“students may enroll in and receive a standard and verified unit of credit for supervised correspondence courses with prior approval of the principal.Standard units of credit will be awarded for the successful completion of such courses when the course is equivalent to that offered in the regular school program and the work is done under the supervision of a licensed teacher, or a person eligible to hold a Virginia license, approved by the local school board.Verified units of credit may be earned when the student has passed the SOL test associated with the correspondence course completed”. Distance learning opportunities are available at no cost to students enrolled in Shenandoah County Public Schools.
The Virginia Department of Education’s Virtual Virginia program offers pre-Advanced Placement (AP), honors, and AP classes as well as academic electives and world languages classes. Virtual Virginia is designed to meet the needs of students who otherwise would be unable to take these courses due to alack of availability or scheduling conflicts. Eligible students enroll in Virtual Virginia through the guidance department of their school. A list of available courses can be found at http://www.virtualvirginia.org.
The Alternative Education Program and the Access Program use on-line curriculum through APEX for students who require an alternate placement and/or alternate method of instruction. Standard units of credit are awarded to students upon successful completion of the course. Verified credits are awarded upon passing the associated SOL test. Participation in these programs requires prior approval by school administrators and/or the Administration of Shenandoah County Public Schools.
Our secondary schools offer Economics and Personal Finance online using the Moodle platform. Students are scheduled for the course during regular school hours, but the curriculum is available online anytime.
On-line curriculum is also used for secondary summer school, remediation programs, and programs that promote on-time graduation.
