Shenandoah County Public Schools Hosts Junior Regional Orchestra
Thirteen SCPS Students Perform with Select Regional Orchestra
JRO March 2014

On March 21 and 22, the Shenandoah County Public Schools hosted the esteemed Western Virginia Junior Regional Orchestra (JRO).  This high caliber ensemble was comprised of the best seventh, eighth, and ninth grade orchestra students from Charlottesville, Lynchburg, Roanoke, and the Shenandoah Valley.  More than three hundred students from thirty-three schools auditioned for the opportunity to perform with the JRO.

JRO Performance 2014

From these three hundred candidates, one hundred forty-one students were selected for two different orchestras: “A” and “B.”  The A Orchestra performed level five e.g. advanced high school literature, while the B Orchestra performed level three to four music.

Guest Conductor  The guest conductor of the A Orchestra was Alexander Kordzaia, a native of Tbilisi, Republic of Georgia.  By the age of 12, he was performing as a piano soloist with orchestras and was considered a child prodigy as a composer.  He is currently the Music Director of the University of Richmond Symphony Orchestra.

Guest conductor

The guest conductor of the B Orchestra was Todd Parrish, Orchestra Editor for Wingert-Jones Publishing and J.W. Pepper, the leading retailer of sheet music in the world.  Mr. Parrish most recently was the director of Hickory High School in Chesapeake, Virginia.  Under his direction, the Hickory Chamber Orchestra performed at the VMEA State Convention, Carnegie Hall, and the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C.

North Fork Middle School chaired the event which included managing the performance site at Sherando High School plus arranging room and board for participants.

 Wendy Whitford

Chair Wendy Whitford  said, "The collaboration  between the students and the  guest conductors was truly inspiring. We were so pleased  to have an event of this magnitude in the Shenandoah    Valley.  I am especially grateful  to our North Fork Middle  School bookkeeper,Summer  Baker, for managing the budget of nearly $10,000.”
